Words and stories have great power. By amplifying and focusing that power, the media can and do change the course of history.
At the moment, the “mainstream,” corporate media, embedded as they are in the neoliberal capitalist system, work insidiously and effectively to manufacture consent* for wars of aggression, for colonialism, for racism and for other forms of oppression. They inculcate the desire for pointless aspirations and status symbols. And they enable us, en masse, as if sleepwalking, to proceed with the casual, brutal, ultimately suicidal destruction of our habitat, in the name of progress and other justifications. The media are taking our collective story in the absolutely wrong direction.
